The short answer
Most contrast therapy and infrared sauna studios use an inline vitamin C shower filter, mounted between the shower arm and the head, with a transparent cartridge that staff can check visually. Vitamin C is used instead of carbon alone because it neutralizes both chlorine and chloramine on contact, requires no maintenance, and shows its own remaining life, which media-based cartridges cannot do.
Why the shower is part of the protocol, not an afterthought
A contrast therapy suite is typically an infrared sauna session of around 45 minutes, a cold plunge of 3 to 5 minutes, and a shower. The shower is not just for rinsing. After heat exposure the skin is warm, pores are open, and blood flow to the skin is elevated. Rinsing that skin in chlorinated municipal water is working against the session.
That is why the filter is a fixture in the room rather than an upgrade.
Vitamin C vs Granular Carbon vs KDF
A note on terms, because “carbon” is not one thing. The comparison below is to granular activated carbon (GAC), the loose bead media used in most budget shower filters. That is different from activated carbon fiber (ACF), a woven cloth form that behaves very differently in a shower and is covered further down.

The chloramine row is the one that matters. Most US municipalities have moved from chlorine to chloramine because it is more stable in the pipes. It is also the compound carbon handles worst, and shower filters marketed on “chlorine removal” often say nothing about it.
The temperature and flow rows matter for a sauna studio specifically. A shower runs at about 104°F and about 2.5 gallons a minute. Granular media was designed for slow, cool drinking water applications; at shower speed it has too little contact time to do much about chloramine, and at shower temperature it can give back some of what it already captured, a process called desorption. Vitamin C does not have either problem, because it is a chemical reaction rather than adsorption and is consumed rather than holding contaminants in place.
Where activated carbon fiber fits
Activated carbon fiber is the exception to the paragraph above, and it is not a rival to vitamin C but a companion stage. Published research puts the adsorption rate of fibrous activated carbon roughly two orders of magnitude above granular, with column testing showing its adsorption zone stays effective largely independent of water flow rate. In other words it keeps working at shower speed, where granular media does not.
The two stages do different jobs. Vitamin C handles chlorine and chloramine, which carbon cannot manage at shower flow rates. Activated carbon fiber handles sediment, organics, and taste and odor, which vitamin C does nothing about. What vitamin C actually does
Ascorbic acid reacts with free chlorine and with chloramine and converts them into trace amounts of harmless byproducts. It is a chemical reaction rather than filtration, which is why it works at full shower temperature and full shower flow, where media that has to physically hold contaminants needs slower water to keep up.
What it does not do
It does not filter sediment or rust on its own. That needs a separate stage, which is what an activated carbon fiber block is for. It also does not soften water, and it will not change your water hardness. For some customers it has helped with lowering pH in areas that run higher.
Buying for a studio vs buying for a home
A studio is buying for a room that runs all day, with staff who need to see at a glance whether a cartridge is spent. That is why the transparent inline housing matters more in a commercial suite than it does at home, and why replacement cadence gets scheduled rather than guessed. Why ascorbic acid, in the published record
Ascorbic acid is not a novelty filter medium. The EPA’s drinking water sample collection guidance specifies ascorbic acid as the agent used to neutralize chlorine in chlorinated samples, and AWWA standard C651 lists it as an approved neutralizing agent for potable water mains. A 2014 study in Water Supply (doi:10.2166/ws.2014.088) compared ascorbic acid, UV and hydrogen peroxide on both chlorinated and chloraminated water and found ascorbic acid the most efficient at removing both, while hydrogen peroxide was ineffective against chloramine.
